THC SUMMER SCHEDULE

Saturday June 2 Taconic Crest Trail, Petersburgh, NY

This is National Trail Day and the Taconic Hiking Club will be doing

trail maintenance on the northern section from Petersburgh to Route 346.

We will meet at the Brunswick Wal-Mart’s Park & Ride at 9:00 a.m. We will provide some tools, but bring your favorite implement of choice.

June 9th. THC Picnic Grafton Lakes State Park, NY

12 p.m. – H’ordeuves and your own favorite wine and or beer.

1 p.m. – Lunch with hot dogs and hamburgers available.

Call Doree Cox at 658-2643 to co-ordinate food by June 2nd.

Come and spend the day hiking, biking, swimming, boating or just

Chatting.

Bring your own drinks and a dish to share. Club will provide set-ups,

hot dogs or hamburgers. Please bring your own chair.

Tuesday June 12 Estate Hike, Millbrook, NY

This will be at the Institute for Eco Systems Studies in Dutchess, County. We will explore the demonstration and wild flower gardens and check out the hiking trails on this beautiful old estate. No admission fee required. Please call Susan for time and meeting place.

Wednesday June 13 Bike Mohawk Bike Path, Niskayuna, NY

Meet at Lyons Park, Niskayuna (Train Station) at 10;00 a.m. Bike to

Jumpin Jacks for lunch. Mostly on bike path.

Thursday June 14 Necropolitan Tour, Menands, NY

Enjoy a leisurely walk in Albany Rural Cemetery, then join a guided history

walk in the adjoining Saint Agnes Cemetery. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Bank

of America Parking Lot south of the Menands Diner or at 11:00 a.m. Saint

Agnes. Cemetery Lane is across Route 32 from the Bank of America Lot.

Monday June 19 Bike around Mohawk River Lock 7, NY

We will bike west to Rexford, cross the Mohawk River on Balltown

Road, stop at Stewarts. Take River Road east to the Crescent Bridge

On Route 9. Then south on Route 9 to Fonda Road and the the

Mohawk Bike Path back to Lock 7. Meet at Lock 7 in Niskayuna at

9:00 a.m. in the Lower Parking Lot, not the boat launch parking lot.

Wednesday June 20 Evening Bike Ride, Saratoga, NY

Combine history, scenery and exercise on the guided tour at the Saratoga

Battlefield. Group will stop at various “stations” to hear stories of 1777.

Helmets are required. Tour leaves the visitors center promptly at 6:00 p.m.

Tuesday June 26 Paddle Ramshorn Marsh, Catskill, NY

We will launch from Dutchmen’s Landing in Catskill. We will hug the

shore and have a short paddle on the Hudson River before exploring

Ramshorn Marsh, which is a marshland sanctuary with abundant wildlife.

We expect to have Audubon naturalist Larry Federman with us giving us

an interpretive look at the flora and fauna. We also expect to have lunch

at the very interesting Audubon site. A donation to the Audubon would be

appreciated. Meet 9:30 a.m. at Delmar Elm Avenue Park & Ride Lot.

Thursday June 28 Bike to & from “Alive at Five”, Albany, NY

Jefferson Starship plays San Francisco Rock from the 60’s. Meet at

3:30 p.m. at the Watervliet entrance to the bike path: that’s north

from Menands to Fifth Street, right to Broadway, right then left under

Rt. 787. Bring bike lock and pad to sit on and supper or money. Rain

cancels this endeavor.

Saturday July 7 Tanglewood Rehearsal, Cheshire, MA

Sunday July 8 Paddle on Minerva Stream, Essex Co., NY

This is a winding stream with beaver dams. We will take our time.

Monday July 9 Paddle Kunjamuk River, Speculator, NY

The tranquil Kunjamuk is one of the more delightful little waterways

of the Adirondacks. We are planning to end the paddle at Elk Lake.

Meet at the Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride off Fire Road at 8:00 a.m.

July 10 Bike Triathlon Route, Schenectady, NY

Schenectady Triathlon Route. Meet at Kawanis Park at 9:30 a.m. on

Route 5S, Rotterdam Junction. Parking is on the bike path so anyone

who would like could ride the path.

Wednesday July 11 Little Johnny Trail, Grafton, NY

This is another in a series of hikes in the Grafton Lakes State Park to help

complete your quest for the Trails Club patch. We will be doing the

Little Johnny Trail and if time allows (and people are willing) we will hike

the Dickinson Fire Tower. Must call Gayle for time and meeting place.

Thursday July 12 Paddle Hudson River, Warrensburg to Luzerne, NY

This will be a one- way paddle of 16 miles. It is essentially flatwater with

some current assist in the northern portion. The river is bordered by steep

sloped mountains and beautiful forests with few dwellings until the take

out. We will need to spot cars and will meet at Northway Exit 9 Park &

Ride at 7:30 a.m. Cars with extra rack room will be appreciated.

Monday July 16 Thomas Cole & Blackhead Mts., Maplecrest, NY

This one of the finest sequences of open-ridge hiking to be found in the

Thursday July 19 Somerset Reservoir, VT

Somerset Reservoir, situated approximately 15 miles east of Bennington, VT,

is a rare surprise. Located in the southern half of the Green Mountain National

Forest it is a fairly large body of water and an integral part of a reservoir system utilizing the Deerfield River for electrical power. Surrounded by Vermont’s ski mountains it is largely unspoiled and one of the last lakes in Vermont with nesting

loons. The lake is about five miles long so we can expect a flatwater paddle of

about ten miles to include a picnic lunch and a possible swim. We will meet at

Wal-Mart Plaza in Brunswick at 8:30 a.m.

Tuesday July 24 Paddle on the Poultney River, VT

A car will be spotted at Lock 12 in Whitehall, NY. Put in near Coggman

Bridge. We will paddle down the Poultney river and take the Champlain

Canal one mile to Whitehall. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at I87 Exit 9 Park and Ride.

Tuesday July 31 Bike Around The Mohawk River, Colonie, NY

We will bike west to Rexford, cross the Mohawk River on Balltown

Road, stop at Stewarts. Take River Road east to the Crescent Bridge on

Road 9. Then south on Route 9 to Fonda Road and then the Mohawk

Bike Path back to the Colonie Town Park. Meet at the Colonie Town

Park at 9:00 a.m.

Thursday August 2 Paddle South Inlet, Raquette Lake, NY

South Inlet, which ultimately drains into Sagamore Lake, is a very pleasant two

mile paddle to a small waterfall. The area is a significant viewing area for ducks

and birds. We will launch, take a leisurely paddle to the waterfall and then have

lunch. On the paddle back we will pass the launch area and paddle another mile

to Golden Beach on Raquette for a swim. We will meet at Northway Exit 9 Park

and Ride at 7:30 a.m.

Thursday August 9 Hudson River Paddle, Glens Falls, NY

We will put in at the boat launch at the end of Big Boom Road, head

Toward the Feeder Dam, lunch at some point and return to the put-in.

Saturday August 11 Bike Chestertown, NY

We will bike along the west side of Loon Lake, east side of Warner

Pond, east side of Schroon Lake and stop at the Adirondack General

Store for a snack. Then we will pedal along the full length of the west side of Brandt Lake. Meet at the Northway Exit 9 P & R at 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday August 14 Tour A Conservancy, Columbia Co., NY

This will be a short hike at the former Jon Shorr Land Conservancy that

is now owned by Columbia County. Must call Mrs. Darby for details

of meeting place and time.

Thursday August 16 Paddle South Pond, Long Lake, NY

For a couple hours’ paddle, South Pond, which is just south of Long Lake is

pretty sweet. Because it is difficult to find and since the short access is a bit

steep it is largely underutilized. Depending on the winds we can expect a

leisurely paddle of about six miles, enjoying the loons and the scenery. We

will help each other carrying the boats up and down the 250 foot access. We

will meet at Northway Exit 9 Park and Ride at 7:30 a.m.

Tuesday August 21 Walk Outdoors or Indoors, Berkshire County, MA

We will walk somewhere either a cool hiking spot outdoors or an air

August 28 & 29 Paddle Racquette Lake to Blue Mountain Lake

Day 1, paddle down Browns Tract Inlet to Raqette Lake. We will camp

some place on Raquette Lake the first night. Day 2, we will paddle down

the Marion river, do a short portage to Utowanna Lake, paddle across Eagle

Lake and take out at Blue Mountain Lake, Call early in August if interested.

You will need camping gear and wheels for you boat. We may have to make

Reservations at a camp site on Raquette Lake.
