Tuesday June 2 Section Hike AT in Connecticut

This will be a hike south from Route 4 in Cornwell Bridge north over Breadloaf Mountain, Sharon Mountain and Mount Easter, to Routes 112 and 7 near Falls Village, CT. Please contact Phil for meeting place and time.

Thursday, June 11: Paddle Putnam Pond

Surrounded by high peaks and located in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness, Putnam Pond gets a lot of use during high season. Since we will be in the off-season we will be able to enjoy a small lake of natural beauty with active loons and beavers. This will be a leisurely paddle of less than six miles following the nooks and coves of the shoreline with a picnic lunch in between.

We will meet at Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride at 0800.

Tuesday June 16: Paddle Round Lake NY

The last time we did this paddle (on May 15) we saw 8 Great Blue Herons but no chicks but hopefully they will be hatched by this time. Oh, by the way as we were on the way to Little Round Lake, on the northeast shore, we did see two large Bald Eagles, about fifteen feet above us in trees. We will meet at the Clifton Park Northway Exit 9 P&R off Fire Road at 6 pm.

Tuesday June 23: Long Path in New York

We will hike the first section of this section from Jenny Lane on an old dirt road through the woods. The rest of the hike follows paved roads, some quite busy, that pass through rural Ulster County and the Town of Kerhonkson.

Thursday, June 25: Paddle South Bay of Lake Champlain

Unlike most other portions of Lake Champlain the southern portion is narrow, around ½ mile wide and fairly protected from the wind. About three years ago some of us made this paddle and, at the time, few of us expected this would be anything but a routine trip. It turned out to be a surprisingly excellent time that exceeded all of our expectations. This will be a ten mile round trip exploring the narrows and inlets with its interesting birds and flowers. We will meet at Northway Exit 9 Park and Rice at 0800.

Monday, June 29: Pilot Knob Ridge

This short hike is well rewarded with wonderful views of Lake George. There is an initial moderate climb up to the ridge, then a longer hike back into a waterfall. Coupled with a little history of the land and its acquisition by the Lake George Land Conservancy makes for a satisfying short day. Meet at Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride at 0900.

Tuesday July 7: Bike Back Roads of Schuylerville, NY

This will be a gentle ride along some on the less traveled county roads of this scenic town and surrounding area. Contact Phil for information.

Saturday, July11: Champlain Canal Paddle

Paddle the Champlain Canal starting at Lock 7, Ft. Edward to Lock 6, Ft. Miller for 7.24 miles. If there is interest we can paddle onto Lock 5 in Schuylerville for a total of 10.88 miles.

Sunday, July 12: Fall Stream Paddle

This is an excellent Adirondack backcountry paddle. Starting from the bridge on the Old Piseco Road, we’ll put in at the well-used launch site. We’ll paddle past Fall Lake and continue on to Vly and Mud Lakes. This will be a round trip of around 10 miles. Canoes are best, but intrepid kayakers are welcome. Monday, July 13: Kunjamuk River Paddle

The Kunjamuk is another excellent Adirondack backcountry paddle. This trip will involve negotiating many sharp turns and several beaver dam crossings. If we make it all the way to Elm Lake, this will be a 10.4 mile round trip. We’ll stop and explore Kunjamuk Cave, which is near the first of the two logging road bridges. Thursday, July 16: Wm. Blake Pond, Balm of Gilead Mtn.

We will do two short loops in the area of the Garnet Hill Cross Country Ski area. The first loop will take us up to Hooper Mine (where garnet was mined) and Wm. Blake Pond. A second loop will take us up to Balm of Gilead Mtn., a short climb with dramatic views of 13th Lake, and into the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. We will start from the ski shop. Meet at Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride at 0900.

Tuesday, July21: Paddle Somerset Reservoir

Somerset Reservoir, situated approximately 15 miles east of Bennington VT, is a rare surprise. Located in the southern half of the Green Mountain National Forest it is a fairly large body of water and an integral part of a reservoir system utilizing the Deerfield River for electrical power. Surrounded by Vermont’s ski mountains it is largely unspoiled and one of the last lakes in Vermont with nesting loons. The lake is about five miles long so we can expect a flatwater paddle of about ten miles to include a picnic lunch and a possible swim. We will meet at Wal-Mart Plaza, Brunswick at 0800.

Saturday, July 25: Long Trail-Route 125 to Emily Proctor Shelter

Starting from Vermont Route 125, we’ll head north on the L.T. We’ll pass over Mount Boyce, Battell Mountain, Skylight Pond and Bread Loaf Mountain and finally the Emily Proctor Shelter. From there we’ll hike down the Emily Proctor Trail to our spotted vehicles. The total distance will be 10.8 miles. I will be camping at Branbury State Park. Hopefully this hike will be rescheduled for spring 2010.

This will be a joint outing with the Ottauquechee Section of the Green Mountain Club. We will do section of the AT (to be determined by hosts) east of Hanover. For those who spent time in mid-July doing some of the Appalachian Trail Conference outings in Vermont, this will be a great chance to add some more AT miles. Contact R.J. for more details.

Friday July 31 – Sunday, August 2: Bondcliff Backpack

Located in the White Mountains, Bondcliff at an elevation of 4,265 is one of the Northeast 115ers. We’ll approach this peak from the Wilderness Trail, which starts off the Kancamagus Highway. From the trailhead on our first day, we’ll trek 4.7 miles along the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River, to camp16 and the junction with the Bondcliff Trail. On day two we will climb to the summit of Bondcliff, via the Bondcliff Trail and return to our camp, for a round trip of 8.8 miles. On day three, we’ll pack out and drive home. We’ll hike from the Rt. 8 trailhead to the lean-to and finally the ponds. Activities will include trail work (brushing out, water bars, etc.) and trash removal. Tuesday August 18: Paddle and Hike Tahawus, NY

The plan is to paddle Henderson Lake on one day, camp out one night and

hike to the fire tower on the summit of Mount Adams. You may want to

do just one event and that is okay too, please let me know of your intentions.

Paddling the Kunjamuk has always been a challenge with its twisty-turny oxbows, shallow areas and beaver dams; but it has always been enjoyable. We will stop well short of Elm Lake. Consequently this will be a paddle of less than 10 miles round trip. We will meet at Northway Exit 9 Park and Ride at 0730.

GENTLE REMINDERS

Please remember to submit your hikes for our fall schedule by Saturday, August 15, to Gayle Fountain at pfounta1@nycap.rr.com or 371-8585.

The End to End will be in May 2010 and we are looking for volunteers for all levels of organization of the hike. Pam Bailey and Gayle Fountain have volunteered to be co-chairs for the preliminary and organizational parts of the hike, Kathy Wolfe has volunteered to organize the food and kitchen. Won’t you step forward and help with trail work, cars, moving vehicles, sweeps and trail support? Remember, many hands make light work.
